With the season of giving in full swing, People Organized for Women Empowerment and Representation, a student organization at Fresno State known as P.O.W.E.R., partnered with Planned Parenthood to collect items for teen parents and their children in the Mar Monte’s Teen Success program.
“I wanted a way for Fresno State students and P.O.W.E.R. members to get involved because it definitely goes along with the season of giving,” said club President Justine Esparza. “And it also goes along with supporting the reproductive justice ideas of the club.”
P.O.W.E.R. is a student organization within the Women’s Studies program that is geared towards intersectional feminism.
Esparza says she saw the opportunity to support teen mothers and the future generations they are raising, in the Mar Monte’s Teen Success program and knew she had to get the campus community involved for the holidays.
According to Esparza, the most needed items are diapers, children’s pajamas, makeup and feminine hygiene products.
The gift drive runs until December 14th. All gifts can be dropped off in the Women’s Studies office in McKee Fisk 243 or at a drop off box in front of Social Science 108. All donated items should be new and unopened.
The season of giving does not stop with the P.O.W.E.R gift drive, the Fresno State Sociology club is hosting a hygiene drive for the Fresno Root and Fresno Project Rebound for men and women who have been impacted by the criminal justice system.
Items needed for the Fresno State Sociology club drive include: shampoo, conditioner, body wash, toothbrushes, toothpaste, feminine hygiene products, makeup and razors. If you would like to donate any items listed above, a drop off box is located in front of Social Sciences 108 with the final day to donate is December 14th.
